SIMON KNIGHTON

Composer and Sound Artist

Upcoming show! 4th May at the Southbank Center

I've started to document the process of building a new installation, which I'll be presenting (alongside installs by Sam Longbottom and Tanguy Pocquet) on May the 4th this year at Nonclassical's 20th birthday bash at the Southbank Centre. I'm also writing a piece for string trio and electronics which will consist of rearranged material from a new album I'm releasing through the label. This has been long in the works and has been made in collaboration with many amazing musicians and artists, so I'm very nervous/excited!

I’m a Manchester based composer, originally from Sheffield. This website is designed to showcase the work, ideas and projects that I do as a composer, sound artist and academic.

I make music for classical instruments, sometimes presented in live concerts, sometimes as recorded/electronic pieces, and sometimes as soundtracks for visual artists. I’m particularly interested in spatial system-based music of various kinds, and have spent the last few years producing a series of pieces that I refer to as ‘sound sculptures’ - pieces that forefront space and various types of musical system.

The Live Projects link in the menu has videos and information about many of my concert pieces.

The Studio Projects link has links to studio productions.

The Educator tab has links to some of the workshops I have developed for educational purposes.

The strip gallery at the top of the page contains links to various external pages that feature some of my work.

Please feel free to get in touch for commissions or if you are an ensemble interested in playing an existing piece. I’m always happy to rework old scores for new instrumentation and spaces! I’m also always very happy to chat about sound sculptures, dynamical systems, autonomous music, textural music etc!
